The Okochi Laboratory exhibited an unmanned vegetable kiosk—designed and built primarily by students—at the event “koyart: Encountering Cabins, Art, and Fresh Local Vegetables,” held at the Yokosuka Museum of Art over two days, Saturday, November 4, and Sunday, November 5, 2023. This marked the laboratory’s third consecutive year of participation.
The unmanned vegetable kiosk is constructed using reclaimed wood. Timber that was once destined for the trash is reborn as a small structure that connects farmers with local residents. After the exhibition ends, this kiosk will be taken in by a small farm located in the satoyama hills of central Miura Peninsula, where it will be operated by a young female farmer who has just started her own business. The reuse of reclaimed wood aligns with the philosophy of the farmer, who advocates for sustainable agriculture and practices ecological, pesticide-free organic farming. The kiosk will be installed on a corner facing a narrow road north of the farmhouse, with the farm’s orchard and dense bamboo grove stretching out behind it. The structure, formed by a cluster of reclaimed wood, will blend seamlessly into the surrounding landscape and harmonize with the trees in the background.
We collected exterior cladding materials from a demolished building, cut them to random lengths, and arranged them in parallel rows. The design is simple: vegetable display shelves are suspended across the gaps between these boards. To preserve the freshness of the vegetables despite prolonged exposure to the outdoor environment, we conducted solar radiation simulations to ensure that direct sunlight does not hit any of the shelves, and based on these results, we determined the spacing between the side panels and the position of the shelf boards.
